Distributed image compression technology is an important topic of wireless sensornetwork research. In the wireless sensor network environment, the processing capability andenergy of a single sensor node is severely limited. Due to the huge energy consumption ofcomputing and communicating in image processing of wireless sensor network, thetraditional centralized compression processing will soon make individual sensor nodes runout of energy, greatly reducing the lifetime of the network.This dissertation mainly researchon algorithm of distributed image compression and transmission for wireless sensor network.An improved distributed image compression and transmission algorithm based onSPIHT is brought up, and a image processing demonstration platform has been developedand designed for this algorithm in this dissertation. The main work and innovations are asfollows:1. A comprehensive exposition of distributed data processing technology researchbackground and theories in wireless sensor networks, focusing on analysis of distributedimage compression technology features and application prospects.2. Detailing the main theory of wavelet transform and the applications of wavelet transformin image compression, also study deeply in classical image compression algorithm basedon wavelet transform.3. A distributed image compression and transmission algorithm based on SPIHT is broughtup in this dissertation. The algorithm simplifies the distributed architecture of wirelesssensor network, separates the channels and segments of the color image. The paralleltasks of SPIHT encoding and transmissing the blocks of color image on multiple nodeseffectively overcome the weak points of general distributed encoding, such like complexnetwork structure, the uneven distribution of energy consumption, too big energyconsumption of communication and so on. This algorithm can effectively prolong thelifetime of wireless sensor network.4. Demonstration platform has been developed and designed for the improved distributedimage compression and transmission algorithm. The platform effectively implement andvalidate the proposed algorithm and the effect is good. It can effectively implementdistributed image compression and transmission, balanced the energy consumption ofwireless sensor network, improve the network lifetime and has great practicality.
