With the development of integrated circuits and the more and more advanced manufacturing processing. The performance of FPGA has improved, FPGA realization of image processing is becoming one of the most popular topics. Image processing and target tracking systems have been widely applied in many areas, such as missile guidance, traffic management, robot vision and so on, therefore, research of object tracking is of great significance in daily application and military application.The paper design an image detection and object tracking system based on FPGA, the system used cyclone II as the core process chip to process the image data, store the data and display. Compared with conventional object tracking system, the system has many advantages such as reconfiguration, good real-time performance, high processing rate and designing flexible and so on. The system includes image collection module, image pre-processing module, image binarization module, image filtering module, image storage module and image displaying module, the whole system is tested under the QUARTUS II platform.Algorithms of image detection and object tracking are applied in the paper. The algorithms of image detection include edge detection and peak detection. The paper also introduces kalman filter and particle filter, then the problems of the two algorithms are discussed, finally the two algorithms are completed in the upper computer and the results are analyzed.The results show that the whole hardware system can obtain the image data, processing the data, storage the data and display the image timely, the hardware system can perform the real-time image-processing task. The simulation results of the algorithms shows that the robustness and accuracy can meet the need of requirement.
