Over the last few years, optical fiber sensors have seen increased acceptance andwidespread use. Among the multitude of sensor types, FBG based sensors, more than anyother particular sensor type, have become widely known and popular.Given their intrinsic capability to measure a multitude of parameters such as strain, temperature, pressure, chemical and biological agents—and many others—coupled withtheir flexibility of design to be used as single point or multi-point sensing arrays and theirrelative low cost, make of FBGs ideal devices to be adopted for a multitude of differentsensing applications and implemented in different fields and industries.Because of the wavelength-encoded nature of the FBG sensors, the commonapproaches for detection are the wavelength-division-multiplexing interrogation techniqueand the fiber Fabry–Pérot (FFP) filter interrogation technique. wavelength demodulationsystems There are already commercial FFP–filtering based FBG sensing systems FBGwavelength demodulation systems. This paper studies the FFP–filtering based FBG sensing systems, describes thestructure of FBG sensing systems and research sevaral FBG wavelength demodulationtechniques; introduces the basic principles of FBG sensing systems, and detailed analysisof the principle of FFP–filtering based FBG sensing systems; presents a FPGA-baseddesign for FFP–filtering based FBG sensing systems, and a detailed design requirementsof the system has been given; detailing circuit in the FPGA hardware design and softwaredesign for FFP–filtering based FBG sensing systems; detailed discussion of the FBGsensing wavelength demodulation algorithm has been taken, and a new adaptivewavelength demodulation algorithm has been proposed after analyzing the advantages anddisadvantages of each wavelength demodulation algorithm.
