In order to facilitate the students’ English learning, teachers need to know howmuch the students learn from class teaching. However, it is difficult to allocatesufficientl time slot to conduct collective testing. At the same time, those students whowant to know how much progress they have made in English learning are in ergent needof an objective testing platform of which the results have referential value. Fortunately,with the development of educational informalization, popularization of campus networklays the foundation for building online testing platform which is able to cater for theneeds of both teachers and students.The developing of this platform is based on relevanttheories in software engineering and development specification for information systems.The following work is included: analysis of major technical base for developing on-lineEnglish test platform in higher vocational schools; analysis of demands for on-lineEnglish test platform in higher vocational schools; global and detailed design of on-lineEnglish test platform in higher vocational schools; realization and program test ofon-line English test platform in higher vocational schools. Key points to be studied andrealized are as follows:(1) Test paper-generating algorithm. Test paper-generating refersto the process of selecting questions from the question bank to form a set of testquestions that satisfies the requirement. There are two ways to achieve this: manuallyand automatically, of which the latter is a key part of on-line English test platform.(2)Grading of the test papers. It is one of the most important and most difficult part inon-line English test platform. Different question types may result in different form ofanswers (students’ answers and standard answers), which requires different comparingmethods towards different comparing objects. Therefore, different strategy is needed fordifferent question type.(3) Data mining and data analysis. Analysis of the results ofstudents’ tests and practices provides timely feedback of students’ learning, allowingteachers to adopt effective measures to address various problems in students’ learning.In this project, an on-line English test platform is designed and realized with VisualStudio2008and SQL Server Database Management Software and based on C#.NETtechnique, UML modeling technique and C#programming language. Testing resultsshow that this platform can meet the students’ demand for on-line English test and canhelp them improve their English, thus it is of certain practical value. However, for this platform, the human-computer interaction still needs to be enhanced; the time gapbetween the test paper submit and test paper grading needs to be shortened; questionbank needs to be enlarged; and questions needs to be more specified. These problemsneed to be addressed in use by continual improvement.
