Critical discourse analysis is a discourse analytic tool on the basis of critical linguistics. Originated from literary criticism,"Critical" in critical discourse analysis discards the critics on personal feelings in literary criticism and adds in the critics on social and literature background. Critical linguistics is initiated by Roger Fowler in his book "Language and Control" and after ten years development, in1989, Norman Fairclough and his co-workers put forward the concept of "Critical Discourse Analysis" in their book entitled "Language and Power"(Hereafter critical discourse analysis is abbreviated as CD A.). And CD A is a tool on the basis of linguistic theory and by means of language analysis to uncover the hidden ideology and power control in the discourse. After16years’ development, CDA was introduced to China in1995by Chen Zhongzhu, and from then on CDA began its journey in China. In recent years, CDA is widely applied in analyzing various kinds of texts including different types of news, translation texts, government reports and etc.In the present paper, the author mainly adopts CDA to unveil the ideology behind news reports on RMB appreciation to notify the readers of the existence of ideology and to help them effectively avoid being influenced by these ideologies and get accupercentage news information in a more objective way. In this paper, the author chooses30news reports from6media, including China Daily, People’s Daily, Xinhua Net, CNN, LA Times and Reuters, as corpus and then adopts Fairclough’s analytical tools and metafunctions in Halliday’s systemic functional grammar (Hereafter, it is abbreviated for SFG.) as theoretical framework to analyze the sample reports on RMB appreciation. The combination of Halliday’s ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function and Fairclough’s three-dimensional modal forms the basic framework in this paper. That is transitivity, modality, conversion, classification systems and social and cultural analysis. Firstly, the author employs the four systems above to analyze30news reports in a qualitative way, then the ideology and power control in the Chinese media and the American media will be explored, and secondly by a comparative study of Sino-U.S. news reports by means of the linguistic analysis and social and cultural analysis, the author obtains a result that different ideologies and different power controls are hidden in the news reports of different countries. Finally, it can be concluded that the Chinese media adopt a mild reporting stpercentagegy with avoidance, which is under the influence of Chinese collectivism, tradition of the Golden Mean, and the pursuit of harmony, and the American media use a tough tone and hegemony to force Chinese government to revalue its currency, which reflects the ideology of hegemony and power control and discrimination against China. Through these analyses, this paper aims at making the news readers be aware of the existence of different ideologies in Chinese and American media and enable them not to be affected by these ideologies hidden in the news reports whose language is supposed to be objective; meanwhile, news readers in foreign countries can have an objective view of China, so that China will build a more positive image internationally.
