With the advent of the Big-Data Era, the scale of date to be stored or processed bydata-center is rising sharply, resulting in a sharp increase of energy consumption. In theenergy shortage today, energy consumption has become one of the biggest challengesfacing the data center. Energy consumption is becoming another important parameter themeasure storage system, in addition to performance and reliability. Distributed blockstorage system has becoming one of the typical patterns of building data center, so thestudy on energy conservation techniques of distributed block storage system ismeaningful. From chip-level to disk-level, from RAID-level to cluster-level, there have beensome progresses on storage energy conservation, but these progresses tend to have somelimitations. Generally, the energy conservation technologies primarily achieve throughredundancy, multi-speed, cache, unbalanced loading. Oriented distributed block storagesystem, starting from the existing energy conservation technologies, we combine auxiliarynodes, consistent hashing with virtual node, and skillfully make use of the partitionreplicas strategy, completely avoiding the smallest full-coverage problem faced by otherenergy conservation techniques. We improve the sheepdog with the above techniques andname the improved system Deem, making it possible for multi-replica storage system toachieve the ideal energy conservation effect. The results of comparison between Deem and Sheepdog under same I/O load provethat Deem works. Of course, there are some problems to be solved, such as the lowdegree of automation.
