Mobile video is predicted to be the next hot spot wireless networkapplication. Moreover, with the mobile communication technology andpopularity of smartphones, people are eager for advanced wireless videobroadcast technology. So a question comes naturally with, the existing WIFItechnology or LTE technology and traditional wireless video encoder can meetthe growing need? Wireless communication technology asks for a strongscalability and robustness. An important indicator of the video coding is thevideo compressibility and the quality of reconstruction. Therefore, today’smobile video suffers from three limitations:1) it can not accommodatedifferent users with different channel conditions;2) it lacks robustness towireless interference and errors;3) it is not very effective in the videocompressibility and the quality of reconstruction. Recently, a novel ‘DCAST’approach based on distributed source coding (DSC) is proposed. It can avoiderror propagation and still achieve high compression efficiency in inter framecoding by utilizing coset coding and soft broadcast. However, DCAST is notvery efficient because of rough side information. In this work, we present anovel soft mobile video broadcast approach based on side informationrefinement algorithm (SIR-CAST). SIR-Cast refines and gets more accurateside information to decode the coset values. Moreover, SIR-Cast optimizes theestimate of the quantifying step (Qstep) which is corresponding to the refinedside information. Thus, SIR-CAST outperforms DCAST about1dB-2dB invideo PSNR while maintaining the similar graceful degradation feature asDCAST.
