| The substantial increase of crime and delinquency in Latin America is undeniable. In2001, the Inter-American Development Bank reported that140,000people were killed in theregion,55families are victims of robbery per minute;28million each year.(Crimen eInseguridad, Indicadores para las Américas, FLACSO2010, Chile) In spite of that, there arecountries where is easy to detect a big disproportion around the rates of victimizationregistered by the surveys and the perception of insecurity that the citizens have declared.A tangible example of this disproportion is Chile. Considered as the safest country inLatin America (United Nations Program for Development, UNDP,2013), but at the sametime has one of the largest gaps between victimization and perception of insecurity. That isthe reason why in this research paper and qualitative analysis is demonstrated the enormousinfluence of the media on the perception of insecurity felt by citizens.This research exposes the informative treatment caused by the mass media, focusedmainly on television, for been the medium of easiest access and greatest consumption in thepopulation with respect to information about public safety. Also causes, motives and possiblesolutions to this dilemma are presented by the mass media in Chile. |
