Mural painting is the precious historical and cultural heritage and importantcarrier of China’s ancient civilization, and it has a very high artistic value. Now,because of natural weathering and man-made destruction, lots of murals disease suchas cracks, fade and flake appear. These damaged murals are in urgent need of repairand protection. Traditional manual repair and protection method is not very efficientand many more professional are needed. So the murals can not get timely and effectiveprotection and it become more serious. It is very necessary to applying computertechnology to the mural protection. At present, digital protection of murals has becomethe focus of many studies.In this paper, the research focus on "polo figure". In order to remove cracks in it,the following two aspects works had been done:(1) In order to remove the cracks in the mural,a virtual restoration of the crackshas been introduced. Firstly, the cracks information were extracted by using top-hattransformation, then got it’s binary image by threshold segmentation. Secondly,according to the color and structural information of cracks, the false cracks wereremoved by measuring the connected domain, so as to realize the automaticidentification and label. Finally,the cracks were restored with example-basedinpainting approach. By reconstructing the sample area, the repair time of the damageregion has been greatly shortened, and the repair efficiency has been improved. Thesimulation experiments show that the large cracks can be removed and restoredautomatically.(2) In order to facilitate cultural relics workers will also be able to use acomputer to repair the mural. In this paper, an ancient mural intelligent repair systemwas proposed, the system integrates a variety of image processing methods, and includes multiple function modules, such as: image preprocessing module, divisionrepair object module, disease labeling module, the automatic repair module, imagematching module, and a digital watermark embedded module. The implementation ofthis system not only provided guidance and help for cultural relics repair entityprovides, but also played an important role in the copyright protection of murals andvirtual display.
