HF surface wave radar (HFSWR) works in high frequency band, which is acomplex electromagnetic environment existing strong external interference andnoise. Burst interference, as the main form of external interference, has thecharacteristics of high frequency, unpredictability, high continuity, strong power andso on. With burst interference entering receiver, the noise floor can be raised, andthe detection performance of target peak is depressed. What’s worse, when the burstinterference lasts long enough up to coherent integrated time, it causes theinterruption of target tracking or the failure of tracking formation. Therefore,research on suppressing burst interference for HFSWR becomes a hotspot both athome and abroad.This paper aims at proposing a new and effective method on suppressing burstinterference based on the work of previous researchers. The purpose is to improveHF radar’s resistance to burst interference, furthermore, to improve the performanceof target detection and tracking. The main content of this paper is divided into twoparts: the improved method on suppressing burst interference for monostatic radarand the research on suppressing burst interference for bastatic radar.On the aspect of suppressing burst interference for monostatic radar, theadvantages and disadvantages of traditional wavelet analysis algorithm and matrixdecomposition algorithm are summarized firstly, and then the algorithm combiningwavelet analysis and matrix decomposition is applied to transient interferenceexcision according to the idea of complementarity. However, it is argued that thewavelet-matrix combined method is limited by its single affecting scope, and finallyan improved wavelet-matrix combined proposal is proposed in this paper. Thesimulation results show that this improved scheme can suppress various lightninginterference, minimize the noise floor of the Doppler domain, and improve HFradar’s resistance to burst interference effectively.On the aspect of suppressing burst interference for bastatic radar, the theory ofextracting target information on bastatic radar is described firstly, and then theinfluence of burst interference on bastatic radar performance is analysised. Proposalon suppressing burst interference for bastatic HFSWR based on data fusionalgorithm is proposed finally. The simulation results show that this proposal ofsuppressing burst interference for bastatic HFSWR based on data fusion algorithmcan not only suppress burst interference effectively, but also improve the bastatic HFradar’s resistance to transient interference better than monostatic radar.
