With the development of information technology, the market share of smartphone is increasing year by year. The traditional human-computer interactive way with touch point is not enough to satisfy people’s interactive needs. The hand gesture recognition based on computer vision has become a new research area of human-computer interaction. There is no need for a mid-medium between human and computer communication because one can use hand as the input of computer. Even the user can’t touch smartphone screen, they also can operate it. Chinese number gestures are a way that Chinese people show from one to ten by one hand gesture. In this dissertation, the vision-based hand gesture recognition system was studied and according to the feature of Chinese number gestures, a Chinese number gestures recognition algorithm was proposed. On the basis of analyzing the application framework and application mechanism of smartphone developed by Android operating system, this algorithm was transplanted into the Android platform, a Chinese number gestures recognition system based on Android platform was realized.Firstly, binary image of Chinese number gestures was obtained from original image captured by camera through the image preprocessing technology. The solid circle radius was used to remove palm area, which was restricted by the size of circumscribed quadrilateral of Chinese number gestures region. The solid circle was used to obtain the binary image by removing palm area (contained only the finger and wrist region) with subtraction operation, and then the number of connected regions in the image without palm part were got by labeling algorithm.Then, according to the feature of Chinese number gesture binary image and the number of connected region, the Chinese number gestures recognition algorithm was proposed to distinguish the gestures (except Chinese number gesture7) by length and angle information.Finally, the proposed algorithm was transplanted into the Android platform. Through constitution of Android development environment and JNI programming technology, and the creation of dynamic library and APK file by Android NDK, Chinese number gestures recognition algorithm was realized on the Android platform.This dissertation designs and realizes the Chinese number gestures recognition system on Android platform after studying the correlated characteristics of Android platform. In the PC terminal, the recognition accuracy of the proposed algorithm reaches97.22%, which shows the effectiveness. In the smartphone terminal, the designed system which acquires gesture image via camera achieves the better recognition results.
