With the rapid development of computer hardware and software technology andnetwork technology, the computer desktop which we are familiar with has been morewidely used, and it not only comes from the local computer, and more likely to comefrom a remote computer, that is the remote computer desktop sharing. More and Moreapplications based on the remote desktop sharing technology have flooded into ourdaily life, such as remote control and remote education. However, to achieve theremote computer desktop sharing technology-based applications, we should first solvethe problem which relate to the computer desktop image compression, especiallywhen remote computer desktop sharing application is used in hd resolution and ultrahd resolution filed, which urgently needs a very efficient method for imagecompression.The information contained in the computer desktop images generally verycomplex, one computer desktop image often contains text information, graphicalinformation and traditional pictorial information, and thus the computer desktopimage is called compound image. In this paper, we first introduce and analyze thetraditional natural image compression standard, such as H.264and JPEG, and pointedout the limitations when they are used to compress the computer desktop image whichcontains complex information and different texture, and further we analyze theinsufficient exist in some current compression methods for computer desktop image.Because of the limitation of the traditional nature image compression methodsand the insufficient of the current computer desktop image compression methods, weanalyze the characteristics of the computer desktop image and propose a newcompression method based on HEVC and color clustering for the computer desktopimage, the proposal first divides the computer desktop image into text/graphics block,pictorial block and hybrid block according to the histogram information and texturefeatures of blocks. We introduce a new self-adapting dynamic block classificationmethod, which is different from the traditional block classification method, the newmethod not only save the bit stream but also improve the correctness of classification.and for complex text/graphic block, a color clustering method is used to reduce thenumber of colors to improve compression performance. At last, adaptive run lengthcoding algorithm is used to code the text/graphics block, pictorial block is coded bythe advanced HEVC intra prediction encoding algorithm and hybrid block is coded by hybrid coding method.Finally, we show the experimental results and analysis of the proposal.Experiment results show that our proposed self-adapting dynamic block classificationmethod exactly distinguishes the text\graphical block, pictorial block and hybridblock. Our color clustering method can effectively reduce the number of colors forcomplex text/graphic. The compression performance and subjective image quality ofour proposed method both can outperform H.264, JPEG and JPEG2000, for example,compared with JPEG compression algorithm, the decoding image for our compressionalgorithm has17%average increase for the peak signal-to-noise ratio, and has5%average increase for the structural similarity.
