Since China has proposed the3G international communication standard TD-SCDMA with whole independent intellectual property rights, then also actively participates into3GPP LTE evolution route and the4G mobile communication standardization. At present, telecommunication enterprises and research institutions in many countries are intensifying the research and speeding up the progress, follow the technical proposals of international communication organization, test and verify many new key technologies of wireless communication system.The new algorithms and technical schemes both need to be simulated and verified. For profound exploration of the air interface technology and inovation of key technology, system level simulation is indispensable. Therefore, system level simulation platform has become a extremely important tool for many research institutions and mainstream manufacturers.The main contribution of this paper includes:1. A brief introduction of mobile communication development(from1G to4G), LTE standardization and its key technologies, radio resource managements, the related technologies and methods of system level simulation.2. In system level simulation, handover scenarios were studied in detail, including the mobile media characteristics, handover principles, trigger conditions, the handover process, radio link quality detection and performance metrics.3. Based on the MATLAB software, a LTE system level simulation platform was designed and built, also specifically introduced the main architecture, module components and key part of the modeling process of the simulation platform in detail. Based on the above simulation platform, the handover scenarios in heterogeneous network was set up.Through several simulations and testing, network performance was estimated and the simulation results were analysed deeply at the end.
