With the rapid development and wide application of digital video technologies,three-dimensional video technology has become a research focus of today’s videotechnology, providing users with visual realism and realistic sense. As the amount ofthe data of stereoscopic video is increasing dramatically and multimedia applicationsare compatible with networks, effective stereoscopic video coding and transmission isvery important. How to maintain a higher compression ratio and stable bit ratematching the channel, and to ensure the quality of the stereoscopic video at the sametime, are the key issues of stereoscopic video coding and bit-rate control, which alsohave important roles for the promotion and application of three-dimensional video.This paper researches dual-channel stereoscopic video coding and rate controltechnology based on H.264/AVC, mainly including the following aspects:1. Explore the mechanism of human eye stereo vision, stereo imaging principleand the display technology of three-dimensional video. The basic theory associatedwith the perceptual characteristics of the human eye on the stereoscopic video isanalyzed in detail, which can be used to increase the coding efficiency of stereoscopicvideo compression. Based on the analysis of current mature stereoscopic videoencoding schemes, a stereoscopic video encoder based on H.264/AVC is implemented,in which the left view is base view, supplemented by the right view.2. The relevant technology to traditional bit-rate control is analyzed systematically,and details about classic H.264/AVC rate control algorithm JVT-G012are introduced.Then, the rate control evaluation index for traditional video and stereo video coding isproposed.3. Based on the theories of masking characteristics of human eye stereo visionand the traditional bit rate control algorithm, a new quality-asymmetric rate controlalgorithm for stereoscopic video is proposed, in which the intelligent control theory isapplied. The summarized Fuzzy control rules can establish a relationship of qualityand quantitative parameters between the left and right channels of the stereoscopicvideo.4. A buffer PID controller is established to implement the feedback control forthe buffer of the stereoscopic image pair. The experiment results show that theaverage rate control error of this scheme is1.5%which can control the output rate of stereoscopic video coding precisely. Furthermore, this scheme obtains relatively stableimage quality between the left and right channels, and increases the rate distortionperformance of the encoding, so as to achieve encoding optimization results.Meanwhile, this algorithm has a relatively low computational complexity.
