Detection of unresolved point targets in clutter using an imaging electro optical(EO) or infrared (IR) sensor is required by many military and civilian systemapplications. In general, there are two types of imaging sensors that can be used forthe detection of unresolved point targets: scanning and staring. The scanning sensoris undesirable in many applications because of the cost and complexity ofopto-mechanical scanning systems, and also because any particular point in thescene is sensed only periodically and briefly. At the same time, conventional staringsensor is not very satisfactory, the small format focal plane array (FPA) and the highprocessing load is the crux of the problem. The difficulties of the conventional sensor led to people’s thinking of newconcepts and new schemes for infrared imaging system. We studied a new type ofinfrared imaging sensor through computer simulation, namely the staring infraredspatial modulation sensor. It is able to perform point target detection with a muchsmaller format FPA than would otherwise be required, and simplifies the procedureof information processing. Its most prominent feature is the introduction of spatialmodulation and demodulation process, making the whole system uniquely andeasily performing point target detection. It further provides a fovea enhancement inorder to achieve the high-resolution imaging of the region of interest (ROI).Firstly, an overall design and planning of the simulation of the staring infraredspatial modulation sensor is carried out. We fulfill the simulation framework andcontent arrangements based upon the whole grasp of system functions and key links. The system simulation is designed for five major: spatial modulation modeling, demodulation algorithm research, target motion compensation, the foveaenhancement and system simulation integration.Secondly, according to the implementation process of system functions, research and simulation of the two major stages of the staring infrared spatialmodulation sensor: target detection and sensitive imaging, is dissertated in detail. The spatial modulation model of the target is analyzed and constructed. Thecorresponding demodulation algorithm is programmed, and simulation assessmentof the performance of spatial modulation imaging (SMI) is conducted. A detaileddescription of the implementation rules and program processes of the foveaenhancement is done, and a brief summary and simulation of fovea enhancedimaging (FEI) is carried on.Finally, we executed deep-seated demonstration and study of the parametersetting and function realizing of the staring infrared spatial modulation sensor. InMATLAB R2010a compiler environment, all the functional modules before are integrated and the overall implementation of the system simulation is carriedthrough. Some of the crucial parameters of the system are extracted and the systemtesting and evaluation is completed.
