Peer-to-Peer(P2P) technology has witnessed great development in past few years,and now is widely used in fields of file sharing, voice calls as well as audio/video stream-ing service. Peer-assisted Video-on-Demand(VoD) service, as one of the most importantP2P applications, has attracted huge amounts of users on the Internet. Besides, plenty ofresearchers also paid much attention to the peer-assisted VoD service, with much researchwork about peer-assisted VoD system design[1–4], implementation, measurement[5,6], e-valuation, modeling[7–11]as well as optimization work done.This paper did in-depth exploration to the core policies selection and optimizationproblem of the peer-assisted VoD system. We track the new research topics in P2P VoDresearch area, and design new optimization mechanism for the new demand. This paperalso tries to analyze the optimal core strategy selection combination for the P2P VoDsystem, providingvaluableguidanceforthestrategyselectionandoptimizationintheP2PVoD system. Concretely speaking, the main conclusion and contribution of this thesis areas follows.1. To solve the new research topic that how to make existing BitTorrent system bet-ter supporting the”Playing While Downloading” service, We for the first time godeep into the hybrid BitTorrent system supporting VoD service through modeling,optimization and measurement. We did intensive research on how to make existingBitTorrentsupport”PlayingWhileDownloading”service, whilekeepingthedown-loading efficiency of the downloaders in the BitTorrent system. Different with theexisting research results that just modify the piece selection policy, we modify notonly the piece selection policy but also the peer selection policy to provide better”Playing While Downloading” service in the hybrid BitTorrent system with bothdownloaders and watchers. The evaluation results on PlanetLab show that the per-formance of our proposed policy is much better than that of sequential policy, aswell as the BiToS policy[12].2. Different with existing research results that just analyze and optimize just one corepolicy of P2P VoD system, this paper compare the performance of different policiesselection composition using our simulation framework. We explore the importanceof the three core policies of the P2P VoD system, and try to find the best policy option composition among all the different policy choice compositors of the threecore policies in P2P VoD system. We analyze the performance of different policyoption compositions under different circumstances with our P2P VoD system simu-lation framework, providing detailed guide for the policy selection in the P2P VoDsystem.
