The discipline of sociology became "fashionable" in China in1920s. Under the support of Li Dazhao and Yu Youren, Shanghai People’s College (1922-1927) which had reorganized because of student movement also established the sociology department. The school provides the necessaries for the development of the department of faculty, the rapid development of the department and school has attracted students from all parts of the world and the social people from all walks of life to teaching. Based on the research view of "subject history", this paper uses the concept of "political culture", reconstructs historical facts, and at the same time, reveals the great significance and the far-reaching influence of the sociology department in Shanghai People’s College.Three parts compromise this paper as below:Firstly, trace back to the cause and the process of this department, mainly from two aspects. One is the background of its school; the other is the historical background. Shanghai People’s College was founded by the cooperation of Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, and the sociology department beame complicate because of the involvement of partisan. At the same time, the paper introduces the development of social department in China’s colleges and universities, the investigation department of big society founded on the era background, combing the process of its foundation.Secondly, introduce the tortuous development of the sociology department in Shanghai People’s College. Initially, Deng Zhongxia and Qu Qiubai made outstanding contributions to the faculty, mainly embodied in the teaching contents, the postponement of the famous teachers, the writing of textbooks, etc. The number of students increased year by year and the faculty developed rapidly. However, it was not going smoothly."The Huangren Massacre", which occurred in the Double tenth day in1924, led to the escalation of the sectarian tensions. Finally, Qu Qiubai had to leave Shanghai People’s College. Later, Shi Cuntong succeeded the dean of the sociology department. He still adhered to the school if when it suffered armed dissolution. Before and after the May30th Movement, many teachers and students took part in revolution. And at the same time, the new staff went into the sociology department. Peng Shuzhi became the head of the sociology department in1926. And a year later, Shanghai People’s College was forced to shut down. It also means the end of the sociology department.Last but not least, the sociology department can be rated as the model of the "connecting classroom and street", which can be explored from the three aspects. First of all, a lively, the lively and vivid lectures, the colorful club activities, and the establishment of night shool for aldults are all best proof of that teachers and students paid attention to both theory and practice; Secondly, the May30th movement, the Christian Movement, and the women’s liberation movement, for example, emphasize on major social department’s contribution to the great revolution activities between teachers and students; Finally, comb the main sociology questions they research, and analyze the "doctrine" they indere or criticize. The sociology department is particular in Shanghai People’s College. It helps the school becomes "red college"(the institution of training cadres) from an unkown "longtang college". The people who study or work here are mostly famous from political, military, educational circles and so on. The department’s achievement is not only reflected on the influence of Shanghai People’s College, but also intellectuals of Shanghai and even the whole China in the1930’s, which led to the prevailing of left-wing culture prevails, the growth of the revolutionary ranks.
