Atomic structure is the foundation of chemical knowledge, which has abstract and theoretical characteristics. There are many difficult for students to learn. In this paper, the learning conditions of atomic structure had been explored in The Structure and Nature of Matter of Elective Course3. The researching results have the theoretical and practical meaning to develop the theory of teaching high school chemistry and to reform the teaching the knowledge of atomic structure. The author chose Senior One and Two students as the main study object of the questionnaires and student interviews to explore students’ knowledge about atomic structure. Based on Gagne’s Theories on Learning Conditions, the author analyzed all the alternative conceptions students generated when studying this chapter, emphasizing the reasons why they have these alternative conceptions. The finding of the study indicates that when they study the structure of atom students will have more alternative conceptions as follows. Students mistake electron motion outside atomic nucleus for circular motion around nucleus, are accustomed to using coordinate and momentum of classical mechanics to describe the situation of motion and often cannot understand the randomicity of electron motion; they mistake two electrons of the same energy, arranging in the same energy level, for two ones that have completely same situation of motion, etc. The thesis used learning theories to analyze students’learning of the atomic structure to make them understand the inner and outer conditions of learning atomic structure and, on this basis, designed the procedures of teaching and carried out the study of teaching practice. It can be found that if the teaching about atomic structure is to be efficient, some conditions must be met in the teaching:1) To make students understand how the questions form and have correct learning motivation, the presentation of questions should be clear and precise.2) Lay emphasis on the cultivation of students’imagination about space and make them clear about the inner structure of atom, which can help lay the foundation of learning of atomic structure.3) Teaching should be regular and accomplished step by step instead of having a smattering knowledge.4) Theories should be explained clearly and the clear explanation should be followed by students’discussion and relative practice.5) Direct teaching methods should be employed to describe knowledge and stimulate students’learning interest, such as tables, frameworks, videos, experiments and other visual measures, fully giving free rein to chemistry and promoting students’perception and command of knowledge.
