In recent years, as the disintegration of China’s unit system of society and thegradual decline of urban community, the public activities which were held bygovernment, enterprise or community lost the previous integration ability. Thepublic consciousness has gradually faded because most citizens don’t have the timeand the lack of energy and interest to participate in such public activities. However,unlike the gradually decrease of official publicness, due to the urban community now,people’s unfamiliarity and the relationship between alienation makes people producemore demand for communication and desire, grass-roots society gradually appeared tohave the appeal of citizen publicness. Recently in the area of culture, the emergenceof society-holding culture has broken the situation which was ruling over by thecountry, thus appeared by the enterprise, community, and social organizations sharethe new pattern of cultural undertakings. Because the amusement activities which areheld officially are the festival and other big medium festivals like square culturalactivities and provide large performance space. The relative scarcity of art activitiesfor normal citizens and the gap between the arts and cultural sectors of the city can allproved the disadvantage of developing citizens’ publicness.In this thesis, through visiting the rapidly developed coffee shops in M Street Ccity and their related activities, the author discovered they can not only provide restspace and coffee drinks like traditional business but also organize various cultural andartistic interests in social activities for grassroots community and literary youth astage to show themselves spontaneously through the non-profit mode. On the onehand, this can meet the demand of the number of young people for communicationand entertainment and attract more young people to the purpose of this gathering; Onthe other hand, this can also improve their business sales, achieve the goal of win-win.The small cafés in M Street appear in the city as a new social node and they canpromote the development of C city new rural culture.In the process of the development of cafés in M Street, the government powerhas not involved in its contraction. It is society and market which contributed to thedevelopment of business model of M Street. Interest in literature and art society activities can easily form a new social identity between youth groups, and then it candevelop to a regional cultural publicness. This new public culture has a certain effecton the decline of social atomization community which was caused by economicdevelopment. In addition, this kind of new-publicness which was based on culture canbuild the urban youth civic consciousness and can also promote the development ofChina’s political and economic utility from bottom to top in the near future. It can alsohave the special power in promoting public domain in the city.Because of the absence of the guiding from the government, there are somepotential problems also floating under the calm surface of the M Street small cafés.Lack of unified cafés organization make them can’t get together to face the challengeof the future market and this will gradually lose the attraction of the customers; thelong-term statement of loss also has an effect on the life of M Street. Facing the placeswhich had government involved like South Gong and Drum Lane in Bejing andTianZiFang in Shanghai, what the business model will produce in M Street andwhether will cooperate with the government haven’t’ been decided and need furtherobservation and study. |
