A Study Of The Correlation Between English Learning Anxiety And Learning Strategies In Senior Schools

Since the1970s, studies of second language acquisition have beingexperienced a reform from “how to teach” to “how to learn”. Experts hold thatemotional factors and learner’s strategy are important parts of both personal factors.Previous studies indicate that emotional factors largely effect on foreign languagelearning, where learning anxiety is considered as one of the most importantpsychological factor, language learning anxiety is unique to the complexpsychological phenomenon. These psychological factors will affect the use ofEnglish learning strategies, and then affect the learners English learning.The writer uses Foreign Language Classroom Learning Anxiety Scale (FLCAS)and Strategies Investigation of Language Learning (SILL) among232high schoolstudents through answering the questionnaires (All of the questions have beentranslated into Chinese). Then the writer put the statistics into the softwareSPSS13.0. The results tell the answers to the following questions. What is thecurrent situation of students’ learning anxiety? What are the factors that causeEnglish learning anxiety? What is the condition of English learning strategies as wellas the character of its use? What is the relationship between English learning anxietyand English learning strategy, and what is the difference about English learninganxiety and English learning strategy between different genders? What is theimplication about our learning and teaching in the future? The results tell that themajority of learners have language learning anxiety in the process of Englishlanguage learning. The main causes of anxiety for some students are their lowEnglish proficiency and their not familiar with the English language learningstrategies, as well as inappropriate teaching methods of teachers and students’psychological and physiological factors. Their English learning strategy use is in alow level, to some extent, boys’ level is slightly lower than girls’ level, thus causethe boys’ anxiety level slightly higher than girls’. English learning anxiety leveland the use of English learning strategies level have a negative correlation. We should strengthen students’ English learning strategies, and use effective measures toreduce the anxiety level of students. Teachers should improve their teaching ability,to help students become good language learners.
