In the recent years, the rules of compiling teaching materials have been changed into theform of “One Curriculum Standard, Multiple Teaching Materials” to adapt to the needs of thenew curriculum reform. It is significant advance. But the urbanized orientation and the elitismin the design of the foundation courses have stayed the same. After the new curriculum reform,the rural education has gradually become marginalized, especially in the field of Englishlanguage teaching. As an international language, the education department pays greatattention to it. That is, in China, students from both urban areas and rural areas must takeEnglish exams in order to get a higher education. As English is an international language, theeducation organization pays great attention to it. That is, in China, students from both urbanareas and rural areas must take English exams in order to get a higher education. And Englishwhich carries foreign culture has the urbanized orientation. Because of the limitation ofrealistic conditions in the country schools, English language teaching is facing lots ofdifficulties. Especially, the urbanized orientation of English textbooks makes the Englishteaching activities in rural schools very difficult to carry out. As an English teacher from arural school, the author has experienced all these difficulties, so the thesis aims to make amodest contribution to the improvement of the quality of English teaching in rural schools.The author adopts both qualitative and quantitative methodology in this study with anarduous effort in literature reviews, surveys and questionnaires, as well as interviews, etc. Thetextbook chosen is Renai English Teaching Books in junior high school, which is used in mostareas in Fujian Province including Zhangzhou. The analysis and study of these textbooks areemphasized on the details which have the urbanized orientation. The teachers and studentswhom the author chose to have an interview and answer surveys and questionnaires are fromfour rural schools in Longhai, Zhangzhou.The survey and questionnaires and the intervieware focused on two aspects: The first one is to verify whether the urbanized orientation existsin the textbooks. The second one is to find out what kind of effects this orientation has on theEnglish language teaching.In accordance with the research finding, English textbooks are authoritative over theEnglish teaching in rural schools and the teachers and students in rural schools are morereliable on English textbooks. Therefore, English textbooks have a critical influence on theEnglish teaching in rural schools. An urbanized orientation in Renai English Teaching Books in junior high school is obvious, which makes lots of students in rural schools so tired ofEnglish study that they do too badly in English to enter an ideal high school. Most teachers inrural schools have a passive attitude towards the urbanized orientation in English textbooks.They cope with the textbooks compiled with constructivist ideas by sticking to a fundamentalteaching method, translation teaching method.In the end, based on the findings of this study, this paper proposes some specificsuggestions such as compiling new textbooks, improving teaching conditions in rural schoolsand improving English teaching quality in rural primary schools.
