Vocabulary learning plays a significant role in English acquisition as a second language. The New English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School has higher requirements for senior high school students in their vocabulary acquisition, which is a big challenge for the male students in rural areas. In some rural areas, the teaching facilities are relatively poor and students and teachers are often lack of information. In addition, many male students have some special learning characteristics that their teachers ignore. As a result, many male students have a poor foundation in English vocabulary when they enter senior high school. Some of them even think of vocabulary learning as a burden. So it is easy for them to lose interest in English, which results in a vicious circle. So, as English teachers in rural senior high school, we should pay close attention to such a group of students and try to develop their interest in vocabulary learning by exploring some effective teaching methods. In recent years, task-based language teaching has been advocated by the New English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School, and also proves meaningful to English teaching. Many teachers have been applying the task-based teaching in their English teaching and have reached some new achievements. So how can task-based teaching be applied to vocabulary teaching to help male students in rural senior high school? What is the male students’ main problem in their process of learning vocabulary? Is there any effective teaching and learning strategy to help them solve the problems? With these questions in mind, I chose this topic for my research. In my study:I first present the achievements in vocabulary learning and the definition of task-based language teaching, basic steps of task-based language teaching as well as principles of teaching design Then I make a case study about vocabulary learning for male students by investigating the vocabulary learning and teaching of some students and several teachers in my school. According to the investigation and statistics, I find most of the male students in rural areas have poor foundation in junior school, and even show little interest in English vocabulary learning. They have no learning strategies in their vocabulary learning but are still confident in themselves. I put forward some learning and teaching strategies on the basis of the results of my study from teachers’and students’aspects. For example, as teachers, we should try to develop their interest in vocabulary learning and teach them some useful methods. As students, they should also try to develop their interest in English, try to find some proper approaches that suit themselves and make objective self-assessment.At last, I do an empirical research in my teaching. According to the results of two tests, I find the gap between male and female students’ average score have been narrowed from14.9to1.6, which proves that all the strategies mentioned in the article are effective.
