Textbook, as the main tool of teaching and learning in teaching practice, plays a significant role in teaching process, which acts not only as the major resource of students’knowledge, but also the represent of New English Curriculum Standards. With the education reform growing vigorously and the raise of’many textbooks based on one guideline’, more and more kinds of textbooks swarm into textbook market. Confronting various textbooks, it is vital for teachers to choose a suitable one. At present, the textbook evaluations based on practical teaching is few, so this thesis analyzed and evaluated New Standard English(NSE for short) based on New English Curriculum Standards and questionnaire after studying the achievement acquired at home and abroad. This thesis enriched the theories of textbook evaluation, and has certain referential function for future researches and the teachers and their students who use NSE.This thesis is designed to seek answers to the following three questions:1) Whether NSE is in line with the requirements proposed in New English Curriculum Standards’?2) Whether NSE can fulfill the needs of students and teachers in teaching?3) Whether NSE has deficiencies or not, if so, what are they and how can we improve them? The author adopted questionnaires to conduct the research. The questionnaires, including a teacher questionnaire and a student questionnaire, were adapted from a questionnaire designed by Grant and the questionnaire named Senior High School English Textbook Evaluation Criteria, created by He Anping, a professor in South China Normal University. This survey was conducted in March2012in Shenzhen city of Guangdong Province. The participants in this survey are students and their English teachers from two different schools:one is a key school and the other is an ordinary school. The questionnaire data were analyzed by the statistical software SPSS17.0for quantitative analysis. Descriptive Statistics were used to calculate the proportion, the effective percentage and frequency of options. After researching, the author found that NSE fulfills all the five dimensions proposed by New English Curriculum Standards. At the same time, the editors adopted a creative way to present the content of NSE. NSE comprises all the topics advanced in New English Curriculum Standards. Every module is developed around one topic to train the four basic skills of English and presents the vocabulary in contextual setting. As for the way of teaching grammar, compared with the traditional ones, NSE adopts quite a different way called heuristic teaching which makes the students learn actively rather than passively. Most of the participants regard Culture Conner as their favorite part due to its help and challenges for students to. As some of the topics are repeated, the materials of some passages are not that authentic, in addition, the repetition of vocabulary is too low for students to remember, all these make NSE less popular. |
