In order to study the effects of the retrieval test on the learning materials in thelearning process, the researcher used Latin word and Chinese essay as experimentalmaterials with college students and applied retrieval test classic research paradigm toinvestigate the retrieval test. This research included the following three experiments:For the first experiment, the experimental material is Latin word. The researcherinvestigated the influence of8different retrieval-study program combinations on theretention effect of learning materials. The results showed: In SSTS condition, therecall effect of recall test after ten minutes was best. In STTT condition, the recalleffect of recall test after ten minutes was worst. In the recall test after two days, thecombination of alternately using study and retrieval test was mostly favorable formaterial’s long-term retention, and the recall effect was best.On the basis of the first experiment, in the second experiment,the researcherchose the program combination which have the best recall effect (alternately usingstudy and retrieval test),and add to the length of study and retrieval test to discuss theinfluence of the length of study and retrieval test on the retention effect of learningmaterials.The results showed: in the recall test after ten minutes, the recall resultsimproved with the addition of study and retrieval test times. But after two days’ recalltest, the addition of study and retrieval test times had little effect on long-termretention of learning materials.In the third experiment, the researcher chose three program combinations whichhad the best recall effect, the medium recall effect and the worst recall effect. Thestudy investigated the effect of different program combinations on the materialretention in the learning of Chinese essay, the results showed: In the learning of Chinese essay, whether the recall test was after ten minutes or after two days, thecombination of alternately using study and retrieval test was most favorable forlearning material’s long-term retention, the recall effect was best.
