Reading is regarded as the paramount course in Senior English teaching. That’s why teachers and students attach so much importance to it. Teachers spend much time in reading teaching and students devote themselves to doing reading exercises to improve their reading skills. However, the realistic result is not so ideal as expected. One of the reasons for the fact is that there are certain problems in the traditional reading teaching. For example, there are so many vocabulary and grammar tasks in the process of reading teaching that students’consciousness, initiative and creativity are restrained in a way. Theoretical researches and practical teaching suggest that the reading teaching based on the self-reading can be a relatively ideal teaching mode and make a great difference to the improvement of students’reading ability. Therefore, how students’autonomous reading can be cultivated is a new topic which is worth discussing. Our research is subdivided into five major chapters. In the first chapter Introduction, the writer firstly responds to the question why to develop students’ self-reading ability in senior high school from three aspects, i.e. the practical situation of English reading teaching, the absence of students’self-learning ability and the importance of autonomous reading ability. What comes secondly in the Introduction is the significance of the research. Thirdly, the writer analyzes the possibility of autonomous reading in senior high. At last, the methods of the research are demonstrated.Chapter Two states the theoretical research as well as its background and defines autonomous learning and its characteristics based on the relevant researches from home and abroad.Chapter Three focuses on English reading and autonomous learning, including the concept process method, reading modes, the main barriers of effective reading, the need of application of autonomous learning in reading teaching and the concept of autonomous reading. In Chapter Four, the writer investigates students’autonomous reading ability through a questionnaire and according to the results, the writer analyzes the factors that affect students autonomous reading ability from eight aspects. The purpose of this thesis is to answer these questions by doing experiment between an experimental class and a controlled class for a whole term. The students in the experiment class were taken autonomous learning method, while the controlled class was taken the traditional teaching method. The results were collected and analyzed by SPSS.The results of the test show:autonomous learning can improve the students’ reading ability, promote their reading strategies as well as improve their attitudes to reading class.
