| At present, the quality and improvement of college education have become a greatconcern of the government, society, teachers, students and students’ parents due to therapid development and expansion of academic education. There are a number offactors affecting the quality of college education, and a crucial one among which is theclass attendance which refers to the ratio of the actual number of students present andthe number of students who are required to attend class but fail to come without validexcuses. Not only will class attendance serves as an indication of students’involvement in class, but also a reflection of the education quality and administration. The exploration in class attendance and relevant factors affecting the ratio ofattendance will facilitate colleges and universities to adopt effective strategies for theincrease of the attendance, thus improving school administration as well as the qualityof education. The author of this paper, on the basis of existing researches, intends tomake a systematic and overall study of the present college class attendance by spotchecks, attending classes, investigation and consulting relevant teaching files. It isfound that in the Autumn semester of2012, the ratio of class attendance of63classesin seven colleges of a university was79.81%, and in the Spring semester, the ratio ofclass attendance of2141classes in20colleges of the university reached89%. There isdiversity of class attendance in different colleges, grades and sex. What accounts forthe factors affecting class attendance are student’s attitude, teachers’ classroomteaching, management of school and social impact. Some students are not clearly goaloriented in their study or uninterested in the subject, some lack comprehensivequalities and correct study attitude. Some of the teachers are expected to improve theirteaching skills, enrich the content being taught, adopt better methodology andstrengthen responsibility for education. Some schools fail to attach more importance toclassroom teaching, proper curriculum and administration, in addition, theunsatisfactory educational environment, the drawbacks of the present education system, the negative influence of internet and the difficulties in college graduates employmentadd to the problem of class attendance. The State policy for education, the total qualitycontrol and utilization of academic resources have made it possible for the increase ofcollege class attendance rate. It is suggested that four aspects are to be considered.College students are requested to know why they study at college, how to study theirsubjects enthusiastically by strengthening self-control and tackling the pressure.Teachers are expected to improve their classroom teaching skills and teachingmethodology with strong responsibility. Colleges are required to attach great importance to teaching and learning, optimizing curriculum, stressing on control ofteaching quality, perfecting testing, strengthening the construction of campus culture. The society should deepen the reform of the educational system, optimizing networkenvironment and strengthening employment guidance. Only with the joint efforts ofdifferent parts will students study more effectively and participate in classroomactivities with more interest, thus minimizing the rate of absence and achieve the goalof colleges in training talented people. |
