Freshman Seminar as a mode of curriculum reform, which based on seminar, emphasizing that students and teachers explore and study the issue together, cultivate student independent study and critical thinking. Freshman Seminar help students to complete the adaptive switching and academic transformation, make the first-year college students integrate into the college research and life quickly, and improve students’ academic research ability. Local University Freshman Seminar is benefit for local University educational reform, let more students start researching much more earlier. It can improve the quality of education and academic research in local University.This study used Literature method, Comparative method and Investigation method to research Freshman Seminar’s model and management, points out the general, diversity, uniqueness and problem of Research University between China and America. Describing the model and management of Freshman Seminar in local University. Taking samples from10professors and356students who take part in Freshman Seminar of Guangxi University, and used spss17.0statistical software takes statistical analysis on data. Reveals the problem of Freshman Seminar’s model and management in local University. Based on the success experience of freshman Seminar in both China and America, explore the model and management of Freshman Seminar in local University. Though this research, we hope to provide the way to build and manage Freshman Seminar in local University.Curriculum leadership theories of Henderson emphasize the leader role of managers and teachers in curriculum design, implementation and evaluation. Curriculum management theory of Schwab point out that study of curriculum management should focus on teachers and students, build up the management system of Freshman Seminar for local University by emphasizing the importance of teachers and students’ function in curriculum management.Taking interview and samples from professors and students who take part in Freshman Seminar of Guangxi University, and statistical analysis on data, we found:Firstly, students like Freshman Seminar; the scale of Freshman Seminar has to expand in further. Secondly, student rarely involved in setting up curriculum and curriculum evaluation, students’ lack of communication with professor, still maintain the traditional teaching mode. Thirdly, there are communicating problems among manager professor and student, which cause low efficient of curriculum management. Forth, Freshman Seminar model and management are not well adapted to the development of students and teachers. We should extend and improve the model and management of Freshman Seminar.On this basis, we presented suggestions for improving the management of Freshman Seminar in local University. For building the model of Freshman Seminar in local University:First of all, adaptable model, such as freshman orientation model, introducing the history of college, using the facilities in college, teaching by high level college students, four years of university study and life planning, library database using and literature inquiry. Secondly, academic steering model, include speech and debate model, problem orientation model, advanced seminar model, practice model. Thirdly, diversified curriculum model, including interdisciplinary model, overlap and cross curriculum model, edge discipline model, comprehensive curriculum model. Forth, course informational model, including network technology and database using model, network communication between teachers and students, communication among students, software design, information feedback, network writing and correcting model.In the aspect of Freshman Seminar management in local University: firstly, reform teacher selection system of Freshman Seminar, to enable more young teachers takes part in the practice of freshman seminar. Secondly, in the curriculum aspect, pay attention to the need and expectation of teachers and students, strengthen the student information collection. Thirdly, establishing a reasonable course evaluation standard, and strengthen supervision of Freshman Seminar. Finally, pay attention to adjust the curriculum, strengthen the feedback information collection of Freshman Seminar, continuous improvement of the course.
