In language learning process vocabulary is the core, the most basic and the mostimportant part of the language.“All languages are formed by vocabular, andvocabularies build up phrases, sentences, utterances and writings (Ma Guanghui,2007:22).” A language can not be called “language” if it is without expressions and phrases.Hence we can see that the size of vocabulary and the firm degree of memory have adirect impact on language skills. In this sense, the status of vocabulary masteryrepresents the learning level of foreign language and the application level of foreignlanguage in a certain extent.Reading, one of the four basic skills in English, plays a very important role in thecultivation of students’ English language ability. Students improve their understandingability and thinking ability by reading a lot of English materials; which is alsoconducive to enrich linguistic knowledge and expand their vocabulary. Therefore,reading teaching plays a very valuable role in the whole English teaching process.Then is there any relationship between reading strategies and vocabularylearning strategies? To find out the correlation between the reading strategies andvocabulary learning strategies would be helpful for the teachers. Base on the SchemataTheory, this paper uses the vocabulary association strategy as the entry point so as tofind out the correlation between vocabulary association strategy and English readingstrategies.Two questions are focused in the paper. First one, what is the relationshipbetween vocabulary association strategy and English reading strategies? Second,which reading strategies are closely related with the vocabulary association strategy?Questionnaires and interviews are used in this research to collect the data.97studentsfrom three schools are the participants. Based on the results of the data analysis of theresearch, the conclusion is got. It is hoped that the answers to the two questions willbe helpful for the English teachers to help their students improve their vocabularylearning abilities and English reading capabilities.
