In recent years, as the new curriculum reformation developing with a full swing,the high school English textbooks dips into four English skills rather than reading andwriting in the past. And the high school English teachers pay more attention to thestudents’ learning and mastering of the four skills in the general. But, under thedirection and pressure of the college entrance examination, teachers and students haveto focus on the English reading and writing skills and ignore the learing of listening andspeaking. Especially, many provinces and cities cancel these section in the test paper incollege entrance examination, this phenomenon directly give rise to the lacking oflearning motivation. As a result, students’ listening level falls down and they graduallylose interesting in this part, they don’t like taking part in English listening activities andmissions which their teachers hold. This hinder the raising of English listening level,and it also hinder English teachers to finish their teaching missions. In addition, afterstepping into the society, the purpose of using English for students is commucation. Ifstudents’ listening level are poor, it’s too hard for them to use English in communication.Therefore, it’s not allowed to ignore the training of High school students’ Englishlistening skills.To improve students’ English listening level, we need students to have active andpositive attitude, strong learning interests, reasonable learning method and they alsoneed good learning motivation. For any subject, learning motivation is one of the mostimportant and influencial factors. Many domestic and foreign famous educators andpsychologists are doing the research on this factor. For foreign language subjects andforeign language teaching, students’ learning motivation has its own inevitable position,and in current days, more and more foreign language teachers and researchers areworking on this important topic.Weiner, an American psychologist, who put forward the attribution theory, whichiis the most systematic theory to explain the learning motivation. It focuses on thestudying of the individual cognitive interpretation of success or failure after one’s acts.Through the research of high school students’ English listening present situation, and I use SPSS data processing software to deal with the datas I’ve got from high schools, Ifind something and writh them down in this article that high school English teachers canapply the attribution theory in the teaching process in high school English listening. Andthe theory’s significance lies in that it comes from students themselves, based on theirown points of view to show the causes of the success or failure. We understand thestudents’ self attributions, we can predict their futural learning motivations, and this issignificant for English listening teaching and education and using well of the theory ishelpful to improve students’ listening ability.
