Teachers’ secondary development in the exercises at the end of the text in juniorChinese textbooks (the edition published by the People’s Education Publishing House)means the teacher should re-develop the “discussion and exercises” in the learningmaterials according to the requirements both by the curriculum standards and by theteacher and student. It is necessary for the teacher to re-develop the exercises because1) it is the requirement of the curriculum reform and Chinese subject standard,2) theexercise themselves have some space for improvement;3) it is necessary to makethem more suitable for the local learners. It is very important for the teachers to re-develop the exercises on the ground ofthe learners situations, the original exercises, the learning aims and the learners’ activeparticipation. The strategies include supplement, cutdown, revision, integration, expansion, and making them more interesting. Each strategy of course is composed of variousmeans. For instance, supplement can be done in a total or partial way. Teachers cancut down those that are too difficult, too easy, repetitious, inessential, unpractical. Some concepts, terms, the forms, structures and requirements of the exercises needteacher’s revision. Teachers also need to integrate exercises in the same text, in thesame unit or in the texts by the same author. Expansion means the teacher can transfer, promote some questions or add some operating practices. If the teacher manages tochange the adult words to language fit to children, to change the abstract questions tosituational practices, or to make the exercises connected to the real life, the exerciseswill become more interesting.
