Research On The Process Management Of Interpretation Project For Major Sports Events

As China witnesses rapid development in politics, economy, and culture over recent years, it is increasingly engaged in international exchanges. In this context, a good many of major international sports events have come to China. Driven by the Olympic economy, China’s sports industry is thriving, the industry chain is getting mature, and Chinese people’s sports awareness is increasing drastically. Major sports events, as windows of culture for their host countries, also represent important opportunities of demonstrating such countries’ comprehensive strength. And the quality of language services, particularly interpretation, has become an important indicator of the host country’s service level in the sense of building a barrier-free communication channel. Language services not only impact directly on the quality of sports competitions, but also affect the host country’s international image and competitiveness.Interpretation project management for major sports events is a complex, systematic undertaking, which consists of a number of closely coordinated systems. Whether it is viewed from the macro perspective of overall management or from the micro perspective of detail-oriented services, interpretation project management will unexceptionally entail setting up the service body, determining the language pairs, selecting language service providers, delivering the services during the games time, as well as many other details. Therefore, a whole set of scientific and efficient management measures is required to improve the accuracy, consistency and coordination of interpretation services and increase the efficiency of project operation, thus laying a solid foundation for the success of the event.Based on hands-on language service experiences from the2008Beijing Olympic Games,2010Guangzhou Asian Games,2011Shenzhen Universiade,2012London Olympic Games, and from the preparatory work for the2014Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, this paper presents for the first time an in-depth analysis of interpretation projects involved in major sports events from the viewpoint of a organizing committee. In doing so, the author takes into consideration the characteristics of interpretation projects for major sports events at home and abroad, and adopts the theoretical methodology of "pre-conference planning, on-going conference control, and post-conference summarization." In addition, this paper takes an innovative approach by researching into the process management of interpretation project for major sports events, with an emphasis on the concept of "project management". This paper represents a full combination of project management theories and practices, raises the concept of "synergic hierarchy" of management personnel, further refines the interpreter testing procedures and evaluation standards, systematically summarizes project risks and challenges, and puts forward effective countermeasures. Through this paper, the author intends to provide practical guidance for the management personnel of major sports events, call public attention to this topic, ensure scientific and efficient management of interpretation projects for sports events in China, and thus further increase their management level.
