Textbook and teacher are regarded as the two major elements in English teaching. As the carrier of curriculum, textbooks function as the core materials for teachers’teaching as well as the important source for students’ learning, which exerts directinfluence on both teachers and students. Thus, teachers’ proper use of textbooks is thecrux of the classroom teaching quality. According to the New Curriculum Reform, teachers are required to update their ideas and use the textbooks flexibly and creatively soas to shift their rooted concept of “teaching textbooks” to “teaching with textbooks”. Inrecent years, exploring how teachers’ implicit beliefs influence the explicit teachingbehaviors has become a hot spot. Therefore, the current research on teachers’ use oftextbooks from the perspective of teachers’ beliefs has both theoretical and practicalsignificance. Theoretically, this research intends to establish a framework for theexploration of teachers’ beliefs towards textbook use; practically, it aims to present someimplications on teacher training, textbook compiling and the reform of examinationsystem.Taking NSEFC textbooks, New Senior English for China Students published byPeople’s Education Press, as an example, the current research used the self-designedquestionnaire A Questionnaire of Senior High School English Teachers’ Beliefs towardsTextbook Use to investigate40English teachers from High School Attached to GannanNormal University and Ganzhou No.3Middle School. Most of the senior high school English teachers prefer to apply the text materials to improve students’ readingand speaking; less are used to practice their listening and writing; andd. Teachers’ beliefs are exam-centered.The current research analyzed the causes for the discrepancy and put forward thefollowing suggestions with the hope of improving the effectiveness of NSEFC textbookuse and the quality of senior high school English teaching:a.
