Abstract/Summary:
Teachers’ professionalization, a key trend in the development of teacher careerinternationally, is also one of the central topics in the reform of current teachers’ education inour country. This thesis, the case study in the professional development of a middle-schoolsuperfine English teacher, is to explore phases and characteristics of teacher professionaldevelopment. Based on the specific events and activities of Mrs. Ouyang WeiHong, thesubject of the present study, the researcher tries to give an authentic picture of the teacherdevelopment of Chinese middle schools.The present study adopts qualitative method and the researcher has obtained first-handdata through open-ended interviews as well as making references to published articles,awarded papers and written teaching reflection and diaries.Based on the data above, the thesis firstly describes five stages in Mrs. Ouyang’sprofessional development. Different stage has different content and characteristics. In thepreparatory stage, Mrs. Ouyang laid a solid foundation of English professional knowledge andability by her studying and exercise. Adaptation and imitation were the two key words duringher second stage. Mrs. Ouyang spent the accumulative stage of her career in continuouslearning and training. Forming own unique teaching style marked Mrs. Ouyang’s careermaturity. In the further development stage, Mrs. Ouyang has done her researches in theprocess of teaching and formed consciousness of lifelong learning.Through the case study of Mrs. Ouyang, furthermore, the thesis analyses the internal andexternal factors that contribute to the development of a superfine teacher. Others’ affirmationand encouragement, the family’s support, school leader’s trust and support management style,and campus culture of mutual cooperation between teachers create a good environment forMrs. Ouyang’s professional development. While the internal factors includes the love forteaching, self-consciousness, motivation, and willpower of professional development. On thebasis of description and analysis shown above, the thesis offers insights into the training ofmiddle-school English teachers for Education administrative department and schooladministrators and into the self-development for younger English teachers.
