From the late1920s to the early1930s, a furious debate about the character of China society and China social history lasted as long as a decade in the China ideological theory field. All scholars who participated in the debate described China history and society by means of the general law of historical development and the basic principle of human society revolution proposed by Marxism. During the debate all kinds of historical characters were proposed, including the practical investigation of China society and the theoretical analysis of China society. It was this debate that leaded us into a new era in which scholars investigated China history in the view of Marxism. There were3reasons why the debate broke out. Firstly, the Kuomingtang betrayed the revolution and the failure of the revolution was the direct cause of the debate. Chinese Communist Party and some decent scholars thought deeply about what was the road for China after the revolution failed. Scholars had to make a thorough investigation and furious debate about the character of China society to find the suitable revolution. Secondly, historical materialism was popular in China. During the furious debate that lasted for a decade, liberal scholars analyzed the character of China society in the view of historical materialism, and conducted further investigation on ancient China social society based on the available files. Thirdly, the resolution of the sixth National Congress of CPC showed that the character of China society was changing continuously when China society was invaded by imperial countries. The character of China society was semi-fedual and semi-colonial and the main goal of revolution was to fight against imperialism and feudalism. While other scholars disagreed on the resolution of the sixth National Congress of CPC, Chinese Communist Party insisted on the guidelines and policies of the sixth National Congress of CPC. A furious debate broke out inevitably. This furious debate mainly consisted of three parts. The first part was about the character of China society. There were3main questions:what was the relation between imperialism and China economy development, was China a feudal society or a capitalist society and what was the future of China revolution. The second part was about the China social history. It mainly consisted of debate on Asiatic mode of production, whether slavery existed in China or not and the China feudal society issues. The third part was about the character of China rural society. It mainly argued about what was the main subject of rural society, what was the character of China rural society and what was the main task of China society. The furious debate lasted for a decade and had great influence over the China society. The debate not only defended the resolution of the sixth National Congress of CPC and helped in choosing the suitable road for China revolution, but also contributed to the popularity of historical materialism and localization of Marxism in China as well as the birth of Mao Zedong Thought. Besides, the debate helped contemporaries with the understanding and judgment of China history and Marxism.
