In modern history, seeking national independence, people’s liberation and the revitalization of the Chinese was the ultimate goal of intellectuals. They began their quest for national redemption and started to explore the road of salvation. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, our nation faced an unprecedented crisis. Nationalism waves and democratic tendencies were rising sharply and exhibited a striking new trait.As a famous modern historian and revolutionary, Hou wailu expressed his viewpoint of nationalism and democracy. Moreover, he gave an interpretation on "democracy" and endowed the tasks of establishing the national united front during the anti-Japanese war. In addition, he created closely link between his study of political thought and social reality. He also analyzed the relationship between the Principle of People’s Livelihood and Democracy and expressed his ideas of new democracy.Hou wailu’s thought on nationalism and democracy also influenced his academic research. First, he showed national feature of Marxist theory of history. Second, he focused on exploring the historical development of China’s national roads. Third, he paid attention to nationalism and democracy of characters in modern history.Hou wailu’s thought on nationalism and democracy possessed a certain coherence, practicality and international feature. His study on achieving national liberation and democratic construction in China has important theoretical and practical significance.
