Behind The Transition:Analysis Of Discourse Framework Of Ningbo Anti-PX Event

China have been carrying out the Reform and Opening policy since1980s.With the gradual deepening of reform and opening, China now is in a period of dramatic social change,which lead to a series of structural social problems and social contradictions. The environment conflict is one of the most notable and important social problems. The anti PX events happened in Xiamen has been the beginning of series environment conflict arose in Pengzhou, Shifang,Zhenhai and Maoming. The strong protest against PX, make the meaning of this word beyond what it used to be and become the represent of environment risk.The media evaluations of these social contentions were different. Through preliminary observation, the discourse framework of media, government, and protesters has changed in the anti-PX events happened in Ningbo. Therefore, this study based on the frame theory. On the one hand, this paper makes analysis of local and nonlocal media’s reporting framework on Ningbo anti-PX events based on information sources, reporting tones and reporting themes. On the other hand, this paper also analyses the discourse strategies of protesters and the government during this events and tries to find the theme framework. By the means of comparing the theme framework in Ningbo anti-PX events with which in the anti-PX events before, this paper tries to find how theme frameworks changed and why.The results show that, in the Ningbo anti-PX event, theme frameworks of government, protesters and the local media have changed slightly. While the framework of nonlocal media has changed dramatically:the attitude towards PX project changed from opposition to support, the evaluation of protesters changed from praise to disapproval, the emphasis of the framework has changed from environmental protection to economic development, from civil society to the interest game. According to this paper, the change is actually a correction to the media reporting’s effection in Xiamen anti-PX event. The reason why the theme framework changes is media’s theme framework in Xiamen anti-PX event have arisen demonstration effect and adverse consequences. In China, media attend to be intervener in environment conflicts. This could boost social movement, while also cause problems in appeasing conflict.
