East Asia, is usually referred to Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia geographically. In this paper, the non-traditional security cooperation (NTSC) is discussed for the major countries of East Asiaincluding but not limited to China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea. Few words would be given toRussia. NTSC has drawn great attention worldly and is becoming one the most important issues forinternational committee. Significant progress has been achieved for South Asia with influence ofAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), however the progress for Northeast Asia is a littlebit slow. In this paper, the NTSC of Northeast Asia is analyzed through the flowing aspects: NTSCemerging, current situation, the properties of cooperation and affect factors. The paper is divided into four sections to try to find a way for motivating the NTSC of East Asiastep by step. The current situation of NTSC is briefly reviewed in Section I. The NTSC is a new kind of threatcomparing with traditional security cooperation (TSC). The latter comprises threats for politics andmilitary while the former comprises social, economic, and cultural threats. The nature of NTSC decidesthat multi-strategies other than military should be employed to improve NTSC. As the European Union(EU) and North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA) have significantly improved NTSC for Europeand North America, thus it is crucial to East Asia to get started with NTSC.In Section II, the current situation of NTSC for East Asia is described. The countries of East Asiahave been cooperated with each other on several aspects, i.e. economic security, energy security, environment security and social security. In Section III, the characteristic of NTSC of East Asia and the factors that affect its improving areanalyzed. The relation between East Asia and EU is then investigated. In comparison of EU, threecharacteristics of NTSC for East Asia are given: first, the actions are usually taken after the threats.Second, the pattern of NTSC is cooperative rather than collective. Third, the NTSC is usuallysponsored by minor countries of East Asia rather than influential countries. Two factors the influenceNTSC for East Asia are summarized in this section: the relations between countries in East Asia aremore complicated, the influence of TSC is critical; the policies of U.S. also affect NTSC for East Asia.By summarizing the a couple is ideas that may help to improve the NTSC for East Asia, i.e.improve recognition of countries in East Asia, advocate the cooperation between Northeast Asia andEast Asia, take EC’s affect into account, the paper is then completed.
