Ancient East Asia maintained a longer peaceful international order betweenChina and its small tribute states, contrary to European international political history.Conventional theories made explanations which focused on economic interests, security and legitimacy benefits provided by Tributary System of ancient East Asia. This thesis adopts theories of international political psychology, holding that a statehas its own emotional motives, which would desire formal respects/recognitions fromother states in terms of international political order. We argue that regional stabilitywill be more possible if both prominent state and smaller ones obtained their deservedmutual recognitions; conflict or even war might be on the way if both sides could notget proper international respects. It was the Chinese tribute rituals that provided suchsignificant platforms for realizing states’ emotional esteems. With data fromauthoritative records, we use case study and process tracing methods to examine ourargument. The case study of China-Vietnam relationship in the first half of15centuryshows that mutual respect mechanism indeed made a contribution in peace rebuildingand maintaining process. In short, these findings suggest that mutual respectmechanism of Tributary System, which cared for China and other tribute states’self-esteem emotions, positively prompted a peaceful international order of ancientEast Asian region.
