At present, China is experiencing rapid economic growth and political system transition. The imbalance of economic development and political unfairness are leading to extreme disparity between people at different socioeconomic statuses, inducing more and more social conflicts and disputes. This kind of conflicts, if not resolved properly, often triggers mass public complaints, which affect the daily life of a majority of people. The major approaches for solving social conflicts and disputes include mediation, litigation, arbitration and public complaint. Among these approaches, mediation, as a non-litigation approach, is very unique and important because of its simplicity, timeliness, efficiency and flexibility. This article looks into different approaches to resolve social conflicts, and analyze the advantages of mediation in case studies. The article also discusses the disadvantages of the mediation system in China in comparison with foreign mediation systems, and provides possible solutions to the problems.
