Omission is a common phenomenon in interpretation, especially in the politicalspeech simultaneous interpretation. According to the semantic translation andcommunicative translation theories, if the semantic content and syntactic structure areavailable, the target language should be faithful to the source language as accurately aspossible in the semantic translation while the target language can be equivalent as closeas possible to the source language in the communicative translation. The interpretershave to select the suitable semantic content and syntactic structure either of Englishand Chinese due to the differences between them. In the interpretation of the sourcelanguage into the target language, there exists some omission. The thesis has mainlyinvestigated the omission in the speech of President Obama and Premier Li Keqiang interms of the omission of the notional words and functional words from the perspectivesof semantic cognition and rhetoric in the linguistic context. The semantic cognition arefocused on the lexical words while the rhetorical words are more prominent in thecontext. Thus, the omission phenomenon can well be examined and observed in theinterpretation under the semantic and communicative translation theories so as to guidethe interpreting practice.
