| Tao Te Ching, the gorgeous treasure of Chinese culture, embraces a large number of profound philosophic thoughts of Laozi. Nowadays, Tao Te Ching has been studied and translated ceaselessly by an increasing number of scholars from all over the world for the conciseness, profoundness and richness of its content. Many scholars always have their own original understandings and opinions when they are translating or noting it, showing their translator’s subjectivity. In recent years, many totally new perspectives of translator’s subjectivity have been came up with, and the theory of the hermeneutics by Steiner and his Fourfold Translation Motion Theory provide a new method to study translator’s subjectivityIt has been50years since the first Thai version of Tao Te Ching, and since then there are28versions successively being published. Based on the most classical two Thai versions, this paper demonstrates translator’s subjectivity with the theory of the hermeneutics by Steiner. This paper includes five chapters as following:Chapter One: IntroductionIn this chapter, the source and the significance of the topic, the purpose, literature reviews, some certain theories, the range of studies and study methods are stated.Chapter Two:Translation History of Tao Te Ching in ThailandIn this Chapter, the translation history of Ta Te Ching in Thailand and some other specific information are showed in a chart. And some famous and classical versions are introduced. Besides, being included, the translation history of Tao Te Ching in Thailand is divided into several periods with its own respective features in this chapter.Chapter Three: the Translator’s SubjectivityThis chapter gives the definition of translator’s subjectivity in author’s opinion in this paper and introduces some study results of translator’s subjectivity with the hermeneutics in China. At last, the differences between translator’s subjectivity and the translator’s style of these two versions, and the analysis of their unique translation styles will be discussed. Chapter Four: Analysis of translator’s subjectivity in these two versions of Tao Te Ching with the theory of the hermeneutics by SteinerThis chapter demonstrates the existence of translator’s subjectivity in these two versions, comparing and analyzing their language, cultures, aesthetics and pre-understandings with the Fourfold Translation Motion Theory, namely,"trust","aggression","incorporation", and "compensation" in the Hermeneutics by Steiner.Chapter Five: Conclusion and SuggestionsThis chapter comes to a conclusion of this paper and comes up with other perspectives to the studies of the Thai versions of Tao Te Ching and the necessary conditions to translate Tao Te Ching. Another part of this chapter is some suggestions of translations of Chinese classics in author’s opinion. |
