Through the deep analysis and discussion of art forms of the “itinerant peddler”’srap skills in Song Dynasty, this thesis integrates and analyzes the causes anddevelopmental mechanism of the “itinerant peddler” in Song Dynasty when folk musicis in its unprecedented prosperity. It attempts to explore the music structure and singingtones of the “itinerant peddler”, and the constitution of the supporter of the “itinerantpeddler” and his social status reflected by the performance places. It is expected toreproduce the music historical facts in order to make the proper position of the functionand value of the “itinerant peddler” in Chinese music history.This thesis mainly includes three parts. The first part investigates the livingenvironment of the “itinerant peddler” through integrating the development of thepolitics, economy, culture and society of Song Dynasty. From macro perspective, itgrasps the problems about the history of society and culture which are related to themusic development of the rap “itinerant peddler”. It also researches the causes of the“itinerant peddler”, the development process and the time range of spread from theperspective of history. The second part researches the noumenal features of the“itinerant peddler” from micro perspective. From the perspective of music individual,this thesis analyzes the singing tones and performance measures of the “itinerantpeddler”. It tries to restore and describe the art forms of the “itinerant peddler”, and toexplore its historical style and morphology. The third part mainly talks about theperformance places of the “itinerant peddler”. Then the research view of the itinerantpeddlers is extended to the supporter of creation and inheriting---the performers of“itinerant peddler”. The research of the performance places, the constitution and thesocial status of the performers aims to make clear the efforts that they have made in theprocess of development and evolvement of the “itinerant peddler” art. This paper applies the research methods of history, philology, folklore,ethnomusicology and analysis to conduct a comprehensive and systematicargumentation. It puts the rap art “itinerant peddler” into the cultural soil to search theessential attribute of music skills in the specific historical background, and social andcultural trends. Moreover, it thinks about at the level of “music culture” and combinesthe music noumenal research with the historical culture research to investigate thesociety mapping of the content and form of music skills comprehensively. It alsocombines more research methods of ethnomusicology, and strives to reorganize andreproduce the music life comprehensively and objectively. At the same time, it is hopedto pry into the cultural panorama of rap music in Song Dynasty through the case studyof “itinerant peddler” music.
