England has occupied an important place in the development of politics,economics and culture in the history of Western civilization. Furthermore, when weexamine English music’s place in the history of Western music we can identify an“English Music Phenomenon”. This phenomenon exists not only within in inside ofmusic but in outside of music. Throughout the history of English music, Dunstable, a15thcentury composer, created a new music language which marked the beginning ofthe Renaissance. This would seal his place as a leading figure from polyphony tohomophony in the history of Western music. This dissertation examines throughDunstable as a case studies to explore the internal pattern of the development of Englishmusic history. What’s more, through the "English Music Phenomenon" to find therelationship between musical development and civilization environment.This dissertation is divided into3sections. The first section examines the patternand characteristics of English music from the history of Western music under Englishmusic’ perspectives while identifying the importance of the history of English music in15th century. The second section use music historiography, musical sociology, andmusical analysis methods to find the important implications of Dunstable for thedevelopment process of the Western music. The third section expands and highlights theprevious2parts. The imbalance of the “English Music Phenomenon” will be exploredto illustrate important characteristics of English music’s development. Furthermore willquestioning the relationship between music culture and the history of civilizationprocesses.
