Over the past six hundred years since fourteenth century, watercolor has beenseeking for a own path of development model that fits in itself. During the developingcourse of watercolor, artists’ aesthetic intention has formed different aestheticsschools and subjective views with a feature of diversification. Meanwhile, diversifiedrepresentations of watercolor image language has brought endless inspiration and joyto artists. The subjectivity lies in watercolor image language is one of the corefeatures that distinguishes it from other artistic expressions. It possesses the featuresof visual science including graphic language, space language and color languagewhich are represented by modern arts. With a good command of linguistic schema andprincipal affections, nowadays artists fully use various kinds of composition andgraphical language without any form of painting imitation and thus create a vision of“reconstruction of art” to show their aesthetic perspectives. Image language is aimedat presenting the essence of image and artists’ spiritual world in a specific way ofcreating some kind of off-camera image and presenting principal affections to achievethe integration of affections and image language.This paper is aimed at exploring the creative activities, summarizing valuable andinnovative cases and their development trend and proposing new methods of studyingimage language in terms of current trend of watercolor painting. From a variety ofaspects including vision, composition, form, case, material, color, drawing andprincipal affections, this paper discusses the realistic significance, aestheticperspectives and importance of the image language representation of contemporarywatercolor art. In addition, based on the current situation of watercolor painting andimage language which put tradition aesthetic ideology first, this paper tries to examinecontemporary watercolor system on the basis of local cultural spirit and discuss thevalue and meaning of image language in contemporary watercolor art.
