Edouard Vuillard (1868—1940),is one of the French Nabi School masters inthe end of the19th century. His favourite painting theme is the ordinary family life.In style, his paintings are simple and cautious. In color, his paintings are graceful andconcise. Also, they are of great fun.In this passage, based on the traditionalresearch,I pay more attention to the color language in Edouard Vuillard’s works aswell as the reasons for his artistic style. In the first chapter, the author introduces the internal and external factorswhich makes Vuillard’s painting a unique color language:the underlying cause ishis living environment, where his grandfather and uncle were engaged in dyeingdesign. Therefore, Vial’s childhood is in a colorful world, which frequentlystimulus his keen sense of color sensibility and develops a deep color ofaccomplishment. Also, there are three external reasons. The first one is that he wasinfluenced by the Nabis. especially Nabis’ beauty and decoration ideas from theperspective of a reinterpretation of nature, as well as the pursuit of expressivecolors and rhythmical shape. His purpose is to make the picture with colorfulvariations. Finally, his painting is influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e.The Ukiyo-enovel is a form of language with flat screen treatment, sketched lines or flat paintcolor. The second chapter analyzes the aesthetic features of Vuillard’s works. Thefirst feature is making the color flat. The screen can be divided freely with linesinto a number of different shapes to form a flat effect. The second feature is makingcolor subjective. In Vuillard’s works, colors are not a lot of objective colors, but they are undergoing the painter’s subjective process, where they are transformedinto a pure, bright, and harmonious subjective colors. The third feature is the colorof the decorative beauty, Vuillard painting has a color performance of high purity, color layout balance, and repeated color decorative features. The fourth feature isthe color with the matte effect. Vial often used gasoline palette, using strongadsorption gray jam instead of canvas, which makes the dull picture lookrough, full of soft gray tones and low-key gorgeous screen. The fifth feature is theharmonious beauty of gray tones. He pursued color’s subtle changes, no lightness, purity, elegance, to approach an overall harmonious beauty. The third chapter describes Vuillard’s painting with a colorful language toexpress the symbolic and emotional characteristics. Vial has been affectedMallarme and Gauguin’s theories and ideas, and then he began to explore thesymbolism, such as in Nabi period, he used a simple strong contrasting colors orcomplementary colors, exaggerated colors to create an unnatural feeling, whichreflects a hint of color effect. He also makes good use of brushwork and color linesto blur the edges of objects. With the images blurred, the audience have toimagine and generate the symbolism. Vuillard has a delicate warm personality,He deeply loves his home, his family and all the familiar things around. Vialmakes good use of colors and clever lyrical strokes of color to express his emotion,so his screen is filled with a touch of warmth. Aesthetic characteristics of thescreen as well as Petty Bourgeois Sentiment, In a word, this chapter is the keychapters of this thesis. In the fourth chapter, the author briefly analyse the impact of Vuillard’s works on later generations from the perspective of decorative charm and harmony. In the writing method, the author uses a literature research, and case studies, etc., depending on the purpose to study Vial’s colorful language. I make theextensive literature survey to analyze the ideological Vuillard’s paintings and selectsome parts of the Vial works to analyse and summarize characteristics. When it comes to Vial’s painting innovation and characteristics, firstlythe author uses a method from one point from the surface, and from various typesof color harmony of Vuillard’s works to analyse. Secondly, the author finds thepicture has a Petty Bourgeoisie feature in the works of Vuillard, with unique colorand lyrical strokes, By analyzing the argument, we can see Vial specializes inelegant gray shades, and his colorful language has harmony, matte, subjective, decorative beauty. He puts his life and family sincere emotion into his works, sothat the screen is filled with a faint hint of warmth. And because of the screencontents and the colors atmosphere, the picture has the petty bourgeoisie,.and hisachievements made in the field of decoration also have some impact on futuregenerations. Vial screen affection doctrine and colors can bring people the beautyof harmony, It also affects people to be more conscious in life to purify the mind, and enlighten their emotion. Therefore, to some extent, it promotes theharmonious development of society and family. This is also the significance of thisstudy.
