"Waterways" Displacement Verbs

Li Daoyuan’s Book of Waterways is a very important work in the period of the middle Chinese.Even though the book quoted many kinds of literature in different periods, the most is writtern by Li Daoyuan. Therefore, many precious middle ancient Chinese words are retained in the book,and they are important in the history of Chinese language study. But the grammar study of the book is still not comprehensive,and the study of Motion verbs is so rare, that special articles or books on Book of Waterways has not been seen according to which I has collected.This study is on the motion verbs on Book of Waterways,and it has done a exhaustivly analysis and investigation. I found out129motion verbs, which contain107monosyllabic words and22syllable words.This article totlly has three parts.The first part gaves a presentation of Book of Waterways, and the topic significance and research methods of this study. It says that Book of Waterways is a very important ancient books. But its language is not enough researched.The second part investigates in detail the grammatical function of129motion verbs on Book of Waterways, including the definition, overview, syntactic function and the collocation of the motion verbs on Book of Waterways. In the end, it also briefly introduces the phenomenon of motion verbs in series.The third part is about semantic investigation of the motion verbs on Book of Waterways, and they can be divided into seven small classes, that’s come and go, up and down, in and out, pass, meet and send, flight and walk, arrive. Not only, the article also makes investigation for each small class.After the above research, the motion verbs on Book of Waterways still is given priority to one-syllable words.They can not only be used as Predicates, but also can be used as Subjects, Objects, Attributives, Adverbials, etc; When they are used as Predicates, their collocations of Subjects, Objects, Adverbials, complement components are very rich. There are many phenomena of linking words together.Some are the verbs in series,some are Adverbials and centers. The number of come and go motion verbs are the most in comparison with the others on the book.The motion verbs about the flow are very rich,and this is one of characteristics of the vocabulary on Book of Waterways.
