Starting from Benjamin’s Critique of Technology, this paper has analyzed theimpact of mechanical reproduction technology on art, and explored how to nurturetechnology and how to create art. In the above analysis process, the author has raiseda dilemma encountered in the development of human use of technology, andattempted to answer how to achieve real freedom in human life.The article mainly applies research methods as returning to history, comparativestudies, linking theory with practice, and so forth. The functions of mechanicalreproduction technology in the artistic practices have been analyzed from a technicalperspective, coming up with the question of presence of art and value orientation.Combining Benjamin’s theory of mechanical reproduction with Marx’s artisticproduction theory, the author has analyzed mechanical reproduction technology’simpact on art. Besides, the author has made a distinction between capitalizedFreedom and lowercased freedom.The text includes six chapters. Except from introduction in Chapter one andconclusion in Chapter six, each chapter has discussed various issues. Chapter twodeals with the theory of mechanical reproduction. Chapter three discusses the impactof mechanical reproduction technology on art from the following three aspects: thepresence of art, the acceptance of art, and the art’s function. Chapter four mainlyexplores another impact of mechanical reproduction technology--improving a flourishof art industry from aspects of commodity, fetishism, standard, and falsity. Chapterfive goes to the core of the subject: explores the relationship between technology andart, points out that we must face up to the trend of integration of technology and art,assimilate technology by life and soul, and create art by using technology, in whichprocess human can establish a reasonable and harmonious relationship between endsand means, and consequently achieve true freedom, that is capitalized Freedom.
