It is broadly known that ancestor worship was very common in ancient religiousconcepts of many ethnic groups in China, and this phenomenon has been continuedtill today. In-depth study on tradition of ancestor worship can lead us to betterunderstanding of the ancient history of our nation, its society, intellectualachievements and beliefs. Therefore, this is undoubtedly very meaningful subject. Onthe research field of the Sui people’s ancestor worship practices, the results ofprevious studies were far unsatisfying. Thus, the paper research in this field, inparticular, to explore cultural abundance of the Volume of Ancestor Worship".The Sui people believe that one’s death doesn’t mean the end of his spiritual life.Therefore, keen sense of ancestor worship, which is often combined with worshipingghosts and demons, forms mysterious world of traditional beliefs. In everyday life ofthe Sui people, whenever struggle with such matters as a disaster or inexplicablethings, moving into a new house, proceeding weddings and funerals, starting upconstruction works, achieving success in business, winning popular acclaim,childbirth, etc., there is a need to undertake a grand ancestor worship ceremony. TheSui people pray to ancestors for their blessing on the coming year, good weather,growth of a population and general prosperity. The rites contain a series of complexpreparations, such as inviting master of the books of Sui to choose appropriate dayand time, purchasing items destined for the sacrifice, calling in family members,inviting a shaman to hold on the rites and read aloud "Volume of Ancestor Worship",etc.Ancestor worship practices constitute an important carrier of collective memoryamong the Sui people. Their contents are very rich. Author of this paper decided touse late master of the books of Shui-Mr. Wei Chaoxian’s copy of the "Volume ofAncestor Worship" as a basis for the research and analysis. Mr. Wei’s habitation placewas in the Sandu Shui Autonomous County Sandong town Gucheng village. The aimis to explore the status and role of ancestral worship in the Sui people’s collectivememory and beliefs, to think over modern sense of the Sui people’s ancestor worshippractices within the context of national attention and protection of the IntangibleCultural Heritage.Trough research on the "Volume of Ancestor Worship", we can spy on how theSui people use mysterious power coming from their ancestors to dispel the evil andpromote the good, how they express gratitude for the received blessing. What is more,we have chance to know the real value and uniqueness of the taboo culture and familyculture of the Sui people as well as of their religious beliefs.In this paper, author used anthropological observations, field interviews andcultural descriptions in order to conduct a comprehensive interpretation of the"Volume of Ancestor Worship". Through complex analysis, the paper ends inconclusion that the "Volume of Ancestor Worship" impresses a great significance in protecting and developing Sui people spiritual support. Thus, the author added hisown reflections upon the ways of appropriate protection of the “Volume of AncestorWorship".
