Based on cultural ecology theory, this paper focuses on the impact of cultural ecology on theorigin and development of Dong folk songs and their adaptation to their surroundings. The paper iscomposed of six parts and it runs to60,000Chinese characters.The introduction part gives a brief introduction to cultural ecology theory and a overview ofcurrent research on Dong folk songs. In the academic circles, the research achievements research onDong folk songs presented in some research papers and works fall into three categories: taxonomy,musicology and literary theory. Cultural ecology, a combination of culture and ecology, consists ofthree levels: geographical environment, economical environment and social life environment. Thepaper is an expanding research compared to the previous research results.Chapter one introduces the geographical environment of Dong folk songs and its influence onthem. The geographical environment can be depicted in two words: mountains and basins, whichimpact the origin, creation and transmission of Dong folk songs.Chapter two explores the economic foundation of Dong folk songs and their impacts. Theeconomic foundation may be described as “rice cultivation and forestry economy”, and its impactson Dong folk songs are embodied in oral presentations and cultural psychology of being attached toone’s native land and unwilling to leave it.Chapter three studies the social life environment of Dong folk songs and its influence. Sociallife environment covers eight aspects of material and mental production, while its influence onDong folk songs lies in function.Chapter discusses cultural ecology change and Dong folk songs’ adaption to it. Culturalecology change is marked by the gradual opening of geographical environment, the co-existence offarming economy and labor economy, and the increasing demand of public cultural facilities. Theadaption of Dong folk songs to the changing environment is in three aspects: transforming the waywe view Dong folk songs from folk literature to intangible cultural heritage, changing the way ofpreserving Dong folk songs from the preservation of documentary records to the training of heritors,shifting the living space of Dong people from a humble village to a fairly-reputed community.Conclusion of this paper summarized the part.Closely connected with the cultural ecology,various singing habits are being integrated as one of the three aspects of cultural ecology, whichhave laid a good foundation for the formation, development, and inheritance of this cultural form.During the course of integration, the three aspects are interactive. Faced with the cultural ecologychange, accordingly Dong people have made some adjustment to their folk songs.
