Culture, in the language learning process, has great significances for learners.The corresponding culture teaching occupies an important position in Englishteaching and directly affects the students’ comprehensive cultural quality."CollegeEnglish Curriculum Requirements" issued in2007requires that we should improvestudents’ comprehensive ability of using English language, and their comprehensivecultural literacy, in order to meet the needs of social development and internationalcommunication."New Standard College English"published by the Foreign LanguageTeaching and Research Press in September2009, is the latest college Englishtextbooks on the market."The new standard college English integrated course" ismostly popular with teachers and students at its extensive topics, new contents, anddiverse culture. It instruct multicultural knowledge and develop interculturalawareness from different angles. But some users reflect that the difficulty of thetextbooks demands higher basic cultural level of learners and also plagues somecollege teachers in the teaching methods. It is particularly important to study thecultural themes of the textbooks.There is less specialized research on college English teaching materials andcultural themes. Byram teaching evaluation system focus on the teaching materialsand cultural content of the textbook culture. it divides cultural themes into eightcategories to evaluate the cultural themes in textbooks. Firstly, the thesis employedByram’s eight-dimensional categorization for cultural themes as text analysis methodto analyze the textbooks’ culture parts. It mainly contained three aspects: typeclassification and characteristics, type structure and layout, and different writingstyles of the cultural themes. From these analyses the author concluded that thetextbooks contain eight categories of cultural themes. Secondly, the thesis employedquestionnaire, to analyze effects of the cultural themes in the New Standard CollegeEnglish Integrated Course from the feedback, in which all the teachers and studentsshow their satisfactions with the cultural themes in the textbooks. Based on these analyses, some suggestions and recommendations about culture teaching were given.
